Creative Careers Counselling

Are you a 30, 40 or 50 something and at a turning point in your career?

Whatever your particular issue may be, you’re probably looking for work that better suits who you are, that stimulates your spirit – and gives you more energy.

Through Creative Careers Counselling you achieve clarity: over your unique qualities, motivational strengths and aims as well as the realistic possibilities. You discover what sort of work really fits you, then formulate a step-by-step plan to realize your career goal(s). Where needed, your communication skills are strengthened so you can network and seek work effectively.

The intention: to set you up so you’re ready to go out and find – or create – the right work as soon as possible.

How we do it

In an initial consultation we map out your situation and career question. We set goals for the Careers Counselling so we can get straight to work. Stimulated by questions and creative tasks, you reflect on your career and investigate:

  • where do I want to go – and what inspires me to get there?
  • what sort of work – and work environment – actually suits me?
  • what are my strengths and weaknesses?
  • what beliefs do I hold – including about myself – that help or hinder me in getting what I want?
  • what concrete steps do I need to take to realize my desires?

If you have little (recent) experience of applying for jobs, we will attend to those essential skills, too (writing good emails or formal letters of application, making a convincing CV, improving your networking and verbal communication).

A Careers Counselling process typically comprises 7 sessions, spaced 2-3 weeks apart. In addition you receive homework assignments to carry out between sessions. And, at the end, you make an action plan for the (immediate) future – the concrete steps you need to take to realize your wishes.

The core of each session is a consultation; alongside, we work with a range of creative techniques including visualisation, drawing and writing exercises. As well as addressing your head and heart, we will tap into your powers of creativity and imagination.

Where appropriate, the process can be extended by a number of sessions to support you (with stimulus/discipline) in the phase of job application, networking and the execution of your action plan.

While the methods are tried and trusted, every individual and situation is unique – so every Creative Careers Counselling process is custom-made and fine-tuned. That can mean more or fewer sessions are needed; we will agree that together beforehand (together with your employer, where appropriate).

Typical issues for
Careers Counselling:

1 I want to develop myself further but I don’t know how best to go about it or which direction to go.

2 I want to play an active role in Dutch society and am looking for work, paid or unpaid, that really suits me.

3 Having lost my job due to company reorganization, I’m asking myself ‘what now?’

4 I’m finding it tough to combine work with looking after the children – how can I manage to still develop my career?

5 It’s going well career-wise but I have no real passion for my work and find myself asking ‘is this all there is then?

6 I have the feeling that cultural differences are holding me back in my job search. I want to learn how to apply for jobs effectively and successfully (letter-writing, CV, interviews, networking), to recognize and get round cultural differences – indeed make positive use of them.
